about

I love the story behind this song. In 2017, new neighbors moved in next door. We live in an isolated area and, for me, neighbors are so important. I like feeling a part of a community, and these neighbors are kindred spirits. Before long, they had a baby who became one of our favorite people. One evening, we were in their kitchen and noticed a bottle of Black Velvet on the counter. Dave said, “Hey, do you know the song Black Velvet?” I hadn’t heard it, so he played it. I started dancing the fussy baby around, and everyone joined in. The baby stopped fussing and his dad said, “I’ll never forget when we danced to Black Velvet.” I knew at that moment it was going to become a song.

lyrics

I remember the night that we danced to Black Velvet
A song that I’d not heard before
And we watched the moon rise looking out your back window
Then we danced just a little bit more

Black Velvet, Black Velvet you go down so smooth
and the song that I’m hearing reminds me of you

But the dancing, it wasn’t enough
when the going got tough, we stopped trying
forgot all our moves, couldn’t get in the groove
And the song kept on playing without us

Black Velvet, Black Velvet you go down so smooth
and the song that I’m hearing reminds me of you

So, we danced for a while ‘til we started to stumble
both lost our footing, and fell, but I’ve
still got that song, and I’ve still got the liquor
and a story that’s too sad to tell

Black Velvet, Black Velvet you go down so smooth
and the song that I’m hearing reminds me of you
Yes, the song that I’m hearing reminds me of you
